How to Maintain Your Petrol Pressure Washer

How to Maintain Your Petrol Pressure Washer

With the economy as it is, plenty of contractors are choosing to get another season or two out of the machine they've got rather than replace it. That's sensible. A petrol pressure washer that's looked after will run for years.

Start With the Basics

  • Keep the machine clean
  • Keep it dry when it's stored
  • Give it a wipe down at the end of a job rather than letting dirt bake on

Keep Your Water Inlet Filter Clear

The most common cause of lost pressure is debris.
Make sure your water feed is clean and the water inlet filter is free from debris. People often assume the pump is failing when it's actually a dirty inlet filter.

Unloader Valve Shuttle and Spring

Check the shuttle and spring on the unloader valve, and change them when they're due. Small job, inexpensive part, but a worn spring inside the shuttle will cost you performance.

Don't Overlook the Consumables

Some parts quietly affect how the machine runs:

  • Engine side: spark plugs and air filters
  • Water side: nozzles, guns, lances and hoses

A worn nozzle in particular will make a healthy machine feel tired.

Oil: Three to Think About

Oil is the one to stay on top of. Check it every time you use the machine, and change it roughly every 100 hours.

  • Engine: Equipguard 10W40
  • Pump: Equipguard SAE 30
  • Gearbox (gearbox machines only): Equipguard SAE 30

The pump and gearbox take the same oil, so that's one oil covering two of the three.

Spares and Accessories

We hold hundreds, if not thousands, of spares and accessories for exactly this reason. Often the parts that keep a machine going are the same ones that improve how it performs.
