Most people only clean their gutters once or twice a year, so it’s easy to fall back on old habits. Unfortunately, some of those habits are dangerous. Here are the most common mistakes we see, and how to avoid them.
Mistake 1: Using a ladder
This is the big one. Climbing a ladder to clean gutters means working at height, leaning out, and often reaching further than is safe. Falls from ladders are a serious risk, and gutter cleaning is exactly the kind of job where they happen.
The fix: don’t use a ladder to clean gutters. A gutter vacuum with a long pole lets you do the whole job with both feet firmly on the ground.
Mistake 2: Doing it by hand
Scooping out gutters by hand is slow, messy and unpleasant. The debris is usually a wet, rotting mix of leaves, moss and silt, and the smell stays on your hands for days, even through gloves.
The fix: let a vacuum do the dirty work. The debris goes straight from the gutter into the machine’s tank, and your hands never touch it.
Mistake 3: Using a conductive pole near cables
Many long poles are made of materials that conduct electricity. Near overhead cables, that’s a real danger.
The fix: use a non-conductive pole. Our gutter poles have Kevlar bottom sections, which don’t conduct electricity, and always look up for cables before raising any pole.
Mistake 4: Leaving it too late
Waiting until the gutters overflow in a winter storm means clearing packed, frozen debris, often in bad weather.
The fix: clean your gutters in autumn, once most of the leaves have fallen, and before frost and heavy rain arrive.
Mistake 5: Making a mess of the garden
Debris dropped from a ladder ends up on paths, patios and lawns.
The fix: a vacuum collects everything in one tank. When you’re done, tip it out. Leaves and moss can usually go straight into flower beds or your garden waste.
