Gutters need looking after all year round. But there’s one period when the need is most obvious, and most urgent: from the end of September through October and November.
Why after summer?
Over spring and summer, gutters quietly fill with dust, seeds and blown debris. Moss spreads from the roof. By the end of summer, you can often stand in the garden, look up, and see green: grass, moss and even small plants growing in the gutter.
If you can see it from the ground, your gutter isn’t doing its job properly.
Now’s the time to clear it out
Once you can see foliage, moss or grass in your gutters, it’s time to get the debris out. Then autumn leaves start landing on top of it, and the blockage gets worse fast.
Clearing gutters now means they’re empty and flowing before winter and the rainy season arrive. That’s when a working gutter matters most, carrying heavy rain away from your walls and foundations.
A simple year-round routine
- Spring: a quick look for winter damage and anything left over from autumn.
- Summer: keep an eye out for moss and plants starting to grow.
- End of September to November: the main clean. Clear out everything before winter.
- Winter: after storms, check that water is running freely from the downpipes.
If your home is surrounded by trees, a second clean in late autumn is worth it.
Make it an easy job
The easier gutter cleaning is, the more likely you are to keep on top of it. A gutter vacuum lets you do the whole job from the ground, in a fraction of the time, with no ladder and no mess on your hands.
We deliver gutter cleaning machines and poles next day across the UK.
