How to Look After Your Gutter Vacuum

A gutter vacuum is a solid investment, and a few minutes of care after each job keeps it working like new. Here’s our routine.

Empty the tank after every use

Don’t drive around with a tank full of debris in the back of the van. Wet leaves and silt start to rot, smell and clog things up.

The good news is you rarely need to bag it. Gutter debris is mostly leaves, moss and soil, so it can usually go straight into flower beds or in with the lawn and garden waste.

Flush it through with a bucket of water

This is the single best habit you can build. At the end of every job:

  1. Fill a bucket with clean water.
  2. Suck the water up through the pole and hose into the tank.
  3. Swill it around the tank.
  4. Tip the water out.

That rinses the pole, hose and tank in one go, and you’re ready for the next day.

Keep the hoses clean

Mud can build up as a coating inside the hose, which reduces airflow and suction. If you notice it, give the hose an extra flush until the water runs clear.

Clean the filters

Check the filters regularly and make sure they’re clear of debris. If your machine uses HEPA filters, they’re washable. Rinse them and let them dry fully before refitting.

Wipe down the motors

Every so often, wipe the motor housing inside the machine with a damp cloth to remove dust and grime.

Look after your poles too

Carbon fibre and Kevlar poles should be flushed through after use. Keep grit off the connectors and clamps so the sections join cleanly and don’t wear.
